Blade Design

The blades were designed by Stevin Laboratories of Delf University in the Netherlands.   A 12˚ twist is built in to the blade to keep the angle of attack constant over the length of the blade. The blades are manufactured using a glass fibre reinforced epoxy.  The results are a very aerodynamic efficient strong blade.

In Northern climate, especially coastal regions icing can be problematic.  When ice builds up on the blades the turbine must be stopped and secured until the ice melts.  Sometime this could mean days of lost production.  Our blades are coated to reduce this problem.  In most areas this strategy works fine.  In extreme icing areas the coating process is not adequate.  AWE is currently developing a heating option for the blades.  With this option the blades can be warmed to melt the ice and the turbine can be put right back into operation.
